Types of Automobile Shipping

5 Types of Automobile Shipping

If you want to arrange for automobile shipping to transport your vehicle overseas, you need to bear in mind a few guidelines and do a little research. Most companies will offer you door-to-door services. They will pick up your vehicle at a convenient location and drop it off at one of their terminals overseas. Since every company offers competitive rates, it’s best to compare quotes to find out which is the best deal available.
1. Open Truck Transport
Although this is the cheapest option that’s ideal for inter-state transportation, it isn’t necessarily the best deal. Your vehicle will be mounted on a carrier along with another 10 to 12 vehicles and the exteriors may get damaged due to dust and debris that settle on the car while it’s being transported.
2. Enclosed Transportation
This is a better option and a more expensive one. The vehicle won’t get damaged because it will be transported in an enclosed container. This option is ideal for vintage cars or luxury vehicles that need to be shipped overseas.

3. Single Vehicle Transport
This option is more expensive than the open truck transportation service because the vehicle will not be transported along with a dozen other cars. This prevents the vehicle from being driven on and off the transportation carrier and in turn minimizes handling. Single vehicle transport is ideal for cars that need to be transported from one state to another.
4. Shipping with Insurance
Most companies will offer car insurance along with the type of transportation service you choose. If you don’t want to buy insurance from the same company, you could choose to work with an independent insurer to get the best rate. Avoid compromising on a good insurance policy. If the vehicle gets damaged during transportation you will have to pay for expensive repairs if you can’t claim the money from the transport company.
5. Vehicle Importers and Exporters
You could also contact a vehicle importer/exporter to find out if you could get a better deal. There are several car dealers who import and export vehicles on a daily basis. You may be able to get your vehicle exported through them for a slightly lower rate.
Although there are several vehicle shipping companies that offer your competitive prices, check any given company’s rating on the Better Business Bureau before signing the auto shipping agreement.
